Palo Santo, the Sacred Wood of Ecuador: Indigenous Traditions & Conservation

September 18, 2024 | Hosted by Airmid Institute

Palo Santo (Bursera graveolens) is native to the dry tropical forests of Latin America, particularly in Ecuador and Peru, where it holds significant cultural, spiritual, and medicinal importance among Indigenous communities.

The tree is globally renowned for its aromatic wood, used for centuries in traditional rituals for purification and healing. Its biology is characterized by a deciduous nature, deep root systems, and the production of complex aromatic compounds that enhance the therapeutic quality of its wood and essential oil.

Although Palo Santo is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, it faces undeniable threats from habitat loss and overharvesting. This reality has prompted urgent conservation efforts, including sustainable harvesting practices, large-scale reforestation, and strict regulations to ensure its preservation and ethical trade.

These crucial conservation efforts in Ecuador are heavily informed by the pioneering work of Rafael Parducci V. and Ivonne Mosler, who have led sustainable practices and collaborated closely with Indigenous communities to protect and utilize Palo Santo responsibly.

Meet the Panelists

Rafael Parducci V.

With over 23 years of experience in the distillation of essential oils in the Republic of Ecuador, Rafael has conducted extensive research and hands-on work with countless native plants, yielding truly remarkable scientific and economic results. Parducci beautifully notes that the true treasure of "El Dorado" lies in the emerald of the plants and the gold found in the color and quality of their exotic essential oils.

Ivonne Mosler

A decade ago, Ivonne discovered the wonders of Amazonian biodiversity and the magic of the tropical dry forests of the Ecuadorian coast. Since then, she has dedicated her career to promoting sustainable practices and the conservation of natural resources. She is a key figure in the landmark project "Resilience to Climate Change of Communities through the Forest Management of Palo Santo in the Framework of Popular and Solidarity Economy in the Province of Santa Elena."
